Top 5 of the year 2019

2019 was again a very interesting cigar year. Many good cigars were smoked, many (for me) new cigars were smoked for the first time and some new discoveries were made. And after disregarding this topic for the last few years, I would like to present my Top 5 cigars of the past year:

Atypical for me, this year the 1st place is awarded to the ADV - Navigator Vespucci Robusto from the Dominican Republic. For me, this relatively mild cigar is the discovery of the year.

On the 2nd place in my subjective ranking is the upcoming Cohiba - Behike 58. Even if this cigar is too fat for me personally, it impresses with an extremely dense and balanced aroma.

Place 3 goes to a the Trinidad - Reyes from Nov 09. I bought the box a few years ago and then forgot. Fortunately, this little Cuban cigar is exceptionally good at the moment.

The 4th place is shared by two Edición Regionales from Cuba. In my opinion, the Punch - Perferidos ER 2018 5ta Avenida is a cigar with a very good maturing potential, while the Ramón Allones - Robusto XXL ER 2015 BeLux has already matured a few years and is developing very well.

2019 war wieder ein sehr interessantes Zigarrenjahr. Es wurden viele guten Zigarren geraucht, viele (für mich) neue Zigarren das erste Mal probiert und einige Neuentdeckungen gemacht. Und nachdem ich das Thema in den letzten paar Jahren vernachlässigt habe, möchte ich wieder einmal meine Top 5-Zigarren des vergangenen Jahres vorstellen:

Für mich untypisch, geht mein Platz 1 dieses Jahr an die ADV - Navigator Vespucci Robusto aus der Dominikanischen Republik. Diese relativ milde Zigarre ist für mich die Entdeckung des Jahres.

Auf Platz 2 bringt es in meiner subjektiven Rangliste die kommende Cohiba - Behike 58. Auch wenn mir persönlich die Zigarre zu dick ist, besticht sie durch ein einen äußerst dichten und ausgewogenen Aromenverlauf.

Platz 3 geht an eine Trinidad - Reyes aus Nov 09. Die Kiste hatte ich vor einigen Jahren gekauft und etwas vergessen. Zum Glück, den aktuell ist diese kleine Kubanerin außergewöhnlich gut.

Platz 4 teilen sich zwei Edición Regionales aus Kuba. Bei der Punch - Perferidos ER 2018 5ta Avenida handelt es sich um eine Zigarre, die meiner Meinung nach ein sehr gutes Reifepotential besitzt, während die Ramón Allones - Robusto XXL ER 2015 BeLux bereits ein paar Jahre reifen durfte und sich prächtig entwickelt.

Punch - Short de Punch (2019)

RG: 52 (20,6 mm)
Length: 151 mm
Longfiller, Totalmente a mano

Optics / Optik:
An almost inconspicuous cigar. The colorado-colored cigar is excellently crafted. The silky glossy wrapper has a fine structure without significant leaf veins.

Eine schon fast unscheinbare Zigarre. Die coloradofarbene Zigarre ist hervorragend verarbeitet. Das seidig glänzende Deckblatt weist eine feine Struktur ohne nennenswerte Blattadern auf.

Cold smell / Kaltgeruch:
For a Cuban cigar rather rare, clear smells of milk chocolate and fruity raisins are noticeable in the cold smell. Light aromas of balsa wood and milk cream resonate in the background.

Für eine cubanische Zigarre eher selten, sind im Kaltgeruch deutliche Gerüche nach Milchschokolade und fruchtigen Rosinen feststellbar. Im Hintergrund schwingen leichte Aromen nach Balsaholz und Milchcreme mit.

1st third / 1. Drittel:
As it has often been noticed, the sweet aromas of the cold smell are not necessarily present in the smoke. This is also the case here. The cigar starts relatively bitter. After a strong woody and somewhat strawy start, the cigar becomes significantly rounder after about 1 cm. From here the cigar is undoubtedly a punch. Mildly woody, somewhat leathery with a subtle floweriness. In addition a nice spiciness.

Wie schon oft festgestellt, sind die süßen Aromen des Kaltgeruches im Rauch nicht unbedingt präsent. So auch hier. Die Zigarre startet relativ herb. Nach einem kräftig holzigen und etwas strohigen Start wird die Zigarre nach etwa 1cm deutlich runder. Ab hier ist die Zigarre unzweifelhaft eine Punch. Mild-holzig, etwas ledrig mit einer subtilen Blumigkeit. Dazu eine schöne Würzigkeit.

2nd third / 2. Drittel:
This spiciness dominates the middle part and displaces the floweriness further into the background. The freshness of the cigar makes it appear a little bit biting. I assume, however, that this will subside after a certain period of aging.

Diese Würzigkeit dominiert den mittleren Teil und drängt die Blumigkeit weiter in den Hintergrund. Der Frische geschuldet wirkt die Zigarre retronasal etwas bissig. Ich gehe jedoch davon aus, dass sich das nach einer gewissen Lagerung legt.


3rd third / 3. Drittel:
At the beginning of the last third, nutty aromas gradually become noticeable. These are complemented by aromas of leather and some earth. Here the cigar already appears wonderfully round and balanced.
Sweet fruit aromas appear at the very end and round off the smoking experience pleasantly.

Zu Beginn des letzten Drittels werden nach und nach nussige Aromen feststellbar. Diese werden durch Aromen nach Leder und etwas Erde ergänzt. Hier wirkt die Zigarre bereits wunderbar rund und ausgewogen.
Ganz am Ende kommen süßliche Fruchtaromen auf und runden den Rauchgenuss angenehm ab.

Ash and combustion / Asche und Abbrand:
Medium grey, slightly patchy with good stability. Beautiful and even burning.

Mittelgrau, leicht fleckig mit einer guten Stabilität. Schön und gleichmäßiger Abbrand.

Conclusion / Fazit
Like the previously smoked Punch - Preferidos ER 2018 5ta Avenida, in my opinion, this one also has a very good aging potential.

Wie schon die zuvor gerauchte Punch - Preferidos ER 2018 5ta Avenida, so weist auch diese hier meiner Meinung nach ein sehr gutes Reifepotential auf.

Arturo Fuente - Don Carlos No. 2

RG: 53 (21,0 mm)
Length: 152 mm
Longfiller, Totalmente a mano

Optics / Optik:
The cigar has a very attractive, colorado-colored wrapper. A remarkably greasy appearance indicates a high proportion of oils. The clearly visible but very fine veins do not disturb the optical impression.

Die Zigarre verfügt über ein sehr ansprechendes, coloradofarbenes Deckblatt. Eine ausgesprochene Speckigkeit lässt auf einen hohen Anteil an Ölen schließen. Die deutlich sichtbaren, jedoch sehr feinen Adern stören das optische Erscheinungsbild nicht.

Cold smell / Kaltgeruch:
In the cold smell the torpedo seems quite mild to me. Beside a light bisquit note I notice a smell of mild wood and black coffee.

Im Kaltgeruch kommt mir die Torpedo recht mild vor. Neben einer leichten Bisquit-Note nehme ich Gerüch nach mildem Holz und schwarzem Kaffee wahr.

1st third / 1. Drittel:
The cigar starts as expected quite mild, but with very nice coffee and hazelnut aromas. The pleasant wood aromas bring a certain spiciness. In the background I perceive aromatic garden herbs. I feel reminded of parsley and lovage. The fat, creamy smoke beautifully fills the mouth. The overall impression is quite complex.

Die Zigarre startet wie erwartet recht mild, jedoch mit sehr schönen Kaffee- und Haselnussaromen. Die angenehmen Holzaromen bringen eine gewisse Würzigkeit mit. Im Hintergrund nehme ich aromatische Gartenkräuter wahr. Ich fühle mich an Petersilie und Liebstöckel erinnert. Der fette, cremige Rauch kleidet den Mundraum schön aus. Recht komplex im Gesamteindruck.

2nd and 3rd third / 2. und 3. Drittel:
Unfortunately, the aromas remain constant over the entire smoke. I would have liked a little variety here. However, the cigar never seemed boring. On the other hand, this consistency documents the outstanding production quality of the cigar.

Leider bleiben die Aromen im gesamten Rauchverlauf konstant. Hier hätte ich mir etwas Abwechslung gewünscht. Allerdings wirkte die Zigarre nie langweilig. Andererseits dokumentiert diese Konstanz die hervorragende Fertigungsqualität der Zigarre.

Conclusion / Fazit:
A very pleasant and complex cigar. Unfortunately, the cigar burned unevenly. However, this did not negatively affect the smoking pleasure.

Eine sehr angenehme und komplexe Zigarre. Leider hatte ich immer wieder kräftigen Schiefbrand, der den Rauchgenuss jedoch nicht negativ beeinflusste.

La Sirena - Belicoso

Length: 140 mm
Longfiller, Totalmente a mano

Optics / Optik:
Like the previously smoked cigars of the brand La Sirena, the Belicoso is also a very appealing cigar. Colorado-madurocoloured with a clearly visible but fine veining. I notice that the wrapper ferment somewhat unevenly, so that the windings are more clearly visible due to slight colour variations.

Wie schon die schon vorher gerauchten Zigarren der Marke La Sirena ist auch die Belicoso eine sehr ansprechende Zigarre. Colorado-madurofarben mit einer deutlich sichtbaren, jedoch feinen Äderung. Mir fällt auf, dass das Deckblatt etwas ungleichmäßig fermentiere, sodass durch leichte Farbabweichungen die Wicklungen deutlicher sichtbar sind.

Cold smell / Kaltgeruch:
In the cold smell I immediately notice opulent chocolate aromas. Almost bitingly chocolaty. Even a cold drawing brings out plenty of chocolate. In the background, slightly nutty aromas are noticeable.

Im Kaltgeruch fallen mir sofort opulente Schokoladenaromen auf. Fast schon beißend schokoladig. Auch ein Kaltzug bringt reichlich Schokolade zum Vorschein. Im Hintergrund sind leicht nussige Aromen feststellbar.

1st third / 1. Drittel:
After the extremely chocolaty cold smell, the cigar starts with extremely spicy aromas. Woody, tobaccoy, yet with a subtle chocolate note. A certain pepperiness floats above everything.

Nach dem extrem schokoladigen Kaltgeruch startet die Zigarre ausgesprochen würzig. Holzig, tabakig, trotzdem mit einer hintergründigen Schokonote. Über allem schwebt eine gewisse Pfeffrigkeit.


2nd third / 2. Drittel:
Towards the middle the pepperiness decreases a little. However, the strong spiciness remains undiminished. But a nice creaminess rounds off the smoking experience.

Zur Mitte hin nimmt die Pfeffrigkeit etwas ab. Die kräftige Würze bleibt aber unvermindert bestehen. Eine schöne Cremigkeit rundet den Rauchgenuss ab.

3rd third / 3. Drittel:
This creaminess also dominates the last third. However, the wortiness only recedes slightly as a result. The cigar has a nice complexity and never gets boring.

Diese Cremigkeit dominiert auch das letzte Drittel. Die Würze tritt dadurch aber nur leicht zurück. Die Zigarre weist eine schöne Komplexität auf und wird nie langweilig.


Notes / Anmerkungen:
Personally, the draught was far too slight for me. I prefer a certain resistance while others prefer a draught like a stovepipe.
At the same time I noticed that the ash was very flaky and had only little stability.

Mir persönlich war der Zug viel zu leicht. Ich mag eher einen gewissen Widerstand während andere mit einem Zug wie ein Ofenrohr bevorzugen.
Gleichzeitig fiel mir auf, dass die Asche sehr flockig war und nur eine geringe Stabilität aufwies.
