Top 5 of the year 2021

Even though it was very quiet on the blog this year, I still smoked no less good cigars. And although I remember a variety of cigars very fondly, 5 cigars stand for me again this year in highlight:

I particularly liked the Por Larrañaga- Montecarlos this year. A quite fresh cigar from 2019. Perhaps I like the cigar so much because it stands with its very slim format (RG 33) massively against the trend to ever thicker formats.

I also really liked another small cigar: Trinidad - Reyes from 2009. The Petit Corona was for me the perfect cigar for Sunday afternoon.

In 3rd place this year is a small pyramid, but very rarely seen: Punch - Petit Pyramide Edición Regional Sudáfrica. The cigar was the first and so far only South African ER released as part of the 2010 Olympics.

My fourth "Cigar of the Year" is also a Cuban cigar: Cohiba Línea 1492 - Siglo V. A classic Lonsdale that, here with a boxing date of Oct 2014, was already very round and balanced. Again, a slim cigar that is also seen rather rarely.

As the last cigar I would like to focus this year on a rather mild cigar from Honduras, which appeals to both beginners and experienced aficionados with its creamy flavors: Flor de Copan Classic - Corona. The cigar had lost sight of for quite some time, but this year rediscovered for me.

Auch wenn es in diesem Jahr sehr ruhig im Blog war, habe ich dennoch nicht minder gute Zigarren geraucht. Und obwohl ich mich an eine Vielzahl von Zigarren sehr gerne zurückerinnere, stechen auch dieses Jahr wieder 5 Zigarren für mich besonders hervor:

Besonders gut hat mir dieses Jahr die Por Larrañaga- Montecarlos gefallen. Ein recht frische Zigarre aus 2019. Vielleicht mag ich die Zigarre auch deswegen so gerne, weil sie mit ihrem sehr schlanken Format (RG 33) massiv dem Trend zu immer dickeren Formaten entgegen steht.

Ebenfalls sehr gut gefallen hat mir eine weitere kleine Zigarre: Trinidad - Reyes aus 2009. Die Petit Corona war für mich die perfekte Zigarre für den Sonntagnachmittag.

Auf Platz 3 findet sich dieses Jahr eine kleine Pyramide, die man jedoch sehr selten sieht: Punch - Petit Pyramide Edición Regional Sudáfrica. Die Zigarre wurde als erste und bisher einzige südafrikanische ER im Rahmen der olympischen Spiele im Jahre 2010 veröffentlicht.

Auch bei meiner vierten „Zigarre des Jahres“ handelt es sich um eine kubanische Zigarre: Cohiba Línea 1492 - Siglo V. Eine klassische Lonsdale, die, hier mit einem Boxing Date von Okt 2014, schon sehr rund und ausgewogen war. Wieder eine schlanke Zigarre, die man auch eher selten sieht.

Als letzte Zigarre möchte ich dieses Jahr eine eher milde Zigarre aus Honduras in den Fokus rücken, die mit ihren sahnigen Aromen sowohl Anfänger, als auch erfahrene Aficionados anspricht: Flor de Copan Classic - Corona. Die Zigarre hatte für längere Zeit aus dem Blick verloren, dieses Jahr aber für mich neu entdeckt.

Punch - Punch Royal ER BeNeLux (2009)

Optics / Optik:
Like most ELs, this one has a classic colorado-maduro wrapper. A nice lardiness testifies to a high percentage of oils. The fine topsheet shows only minimal veining. Unfortunately the surface is slightly uneven. Here, slight unevenness of the doll comes through.

Wie die meisten ELs, so hat auch diese hier ein klassisches colorado-madurofarbenes Deckblatt. Eine schöne Speckigkeit zeugt von einem hohen Anteil an Ölen. Das feine Deckblett weist nur eine minimale Äderung auf. Leider ist die Oberfläche leicht uneben. Hier drücken sich leichte Unebenheiten der Puppe durch.

Cold smell / Kaltgeruch:
Mild cedar wood and cocoa are the main accents of the very fine and creamy cold smell. In addition, slightly flowery hints of orchid and rose are noticeable and complete the olfactory picture of the 10-year-old cigar.

Mildes Zedernholz und Kakao bilden die Hauptakzente des sehr feinen und cremigen Kaltgeruchs. Dazu sind leicht blumige Andeutungen nach Orchidee und Rose feststellbar und runden das Geruchsbild der 10 Jahre alten Zigarre ab.

1st third / 1. Drittel:
Typically Cuban, the cigar starts woody and earthy. I think of beech wood and dry earth. Light roast aromas remind me of toasted bread. In addition I perceive aromas that I would describe as pithy. All in all the cigar shows a beautiful round aroma.

Typisch kubanisch startet die Zigarre holzig und erdig. Ich denke an Buchenholz und trockene Erde. Leichte Röstaromen erinnern an Toastbrot. Dazu nehme ich Aromen wahr, die ich als markig beschreiben würde. Insgesamt zeigt die Zigarre ein schönes, rundes Aromenbild.

2nd third / 2. Drittel:
In the middle section, roast aromas increase to a medium strength. The cigar shows nutty aromas and tart, slightly bitter chocolate notes. The wood aromas decrease a little here. In addition, a juicy and at the same time creamy impression is created, which leaves a full mouth feeling.

Im mittleren Bereich steigern sich Röstaromen zu einer mittleren Stärke. Die Zigarre zeigt nussige Aromen und herbe, leicht bittere Schokonoten. Die Holzaromen nehmen hier etwas ab. Dazu entsteht ein saftiger, gleichzeitig cremiger Eindruck, der ein volles Mundgefühl hinterlässt.

3rd third / 3. Drittel:
In the last third, the wood aromas reappear a little more, but are complemented here by a spicy, aromatic herbal note. In the background I think I perceive hints of resin. Aromas of sweet almond round off the enjoyment.

Im letzten Drittel treten die Holzaromen wieder etwas mehr hervor, werden hier jedoch von einer würzig-aromatischen Kräuternote begleitet. Im Hintergrund glaube ich Harzaromen wahrzunehmen. Aromen von süßer Mandel runden den Genuss ab.

Conclusion / Fazit:
With an age of a well over 10 years, this cigar has already matured well, but can mature for many more years without any problems. This confirms my assessment that the last cigars I smoked from the Punsch brand have a good ageing potential.

Mit einem Alter von gut 10 Jahren ist diese Zigarre schon gut gereift, kann jedoch ohne Probleme noch weiter Jahre reifen. Das bestätigt mich in meiner Einschätzung, dass die zuletzt gerauchten Zigarren der Marke Punsch ein gutes Reifepotential besitzen.

Top 5 of the year 2019

2019 was again a very interesting cigar year. Many good cigars were smoked, many (for me) new cigars were smoked for the first time and some new discoveries were made. And after disregarding this topic for the last few years, I would like to present my Top 5 cigars of the past year:

Atypical for me, this year the 1st place is awarded to the ADV - Navigator Vespucci Robusto from the Dominican Republic. For me, this relatively mild cigar is the discovery of the year.

On the 2nd place in my subjective ranking is the upcoming Cohiba - Behike 58. Even if this cigar is too fat for me personally, it impresses with an extremely dense and balanced aroma.

Place 3 goes to a the Trinidad - Reyes from Nov 09. I bought the box a few years ago and then forgot. Fortunately, this little Cuban cigar is exceptionally good at the moment.

The 4th place is shared by two Edición Regionales from Cuba. In my opinion, the Punch - Perferidos ER 2018 5ta Avenida is a cigar with a very good maturing potential, while the Ramón Allones - Robusto XXL ER 2015 BeLux has already matured a few years and is developing very well.

2019 war wieder ein sehr interessantes Zigarrenjahr. Es wurden viele guten Zigarren geraucht, viele (für mich) neue Zigarren das erste Mal probiert und einige Neuentdeckungen gemacht. Und nachdem ich das Thema in den letzten paar Jahren vernachlässigt habe, möchte ich wieder einmal meine Top 5-Zigarren des vergangenen Jahres vorstellen:

Für mich untypisch, geht mein Platz 1 dieses Jahr an die ADV - Navigator Vespucci Robusto aus der Dominikanischen Republik. Diese relativ milde Zigarre ist für mich die Entdeckung des Jahres.

Auf Platz 2 bringt es in meiner subjektiven Rangliste die kommende Cohiba - Behike 58. Auch wenn mir persönlich die Zigarre zu dick ist, besticht sie durch ein einen äußerst dichten und ausgewogenen Aromenverlauf.

Platz 3 geht an eine Trinidad - Reyes aus Nov 09. Die Kiste hatte ich vor einigen Jahren gekauft und etwas vergessen. Zum Glück, den aktuell ist diese kleine Kubanerin außergewöhnlich gut.

Platz 4 teilen sich zwei Edición Regionales aus Kuba. Bei der Punch - Perferidos ER 2018 5ta Avenida handelt es sich um eine Zigarre, die meiner Meinung nach ein sehr gutes Reifepotential besitzt, während die Ramón Allones - Robusto XXL ER 2015 BeLux bereits ein paar Jahre reifen durfte und sich prächtig entwickelt.

Punch - Short de Punch (2019)

Length: 151 mm
Longfiller, Totalmente a mano

Optics / Optik:
An almost inconspicuous cigar. The colorado-colored cigar is excellently crafted. The silky glossy wrapper has a fine structure without significant leaf veins.

Eine schon fast unscheinbare Zigarre. Die coloradofarbene Zigarre ist hervorragend verarbeitet. Das seidig glänzende Deckblatt weist eine feine Struktur ohne nennenswerte Blattadern auf.

Cold smell / Kaltgeruch:
For a Cuban cigar rather rare, clear smells of milk chocolate and fruity raisins are noticeable in the cold smell. Light aromas of balsa wood and milk cream resonate in the background.

Für eine cubanische Zigarre eher selten, sind im Kaltgeruch deutliche Gerüche nach Milchschokolade und fruchtigen Rosinen feststellbar. Im Hintergrund schwingen leichte Aromen nach Balsaholz und Milchcreme mit.

1st third / 1. Drittel:
As it has often been noticed, the sweet aromas of the cold smell are not necessarily present in the smoke. This is also the case here. The cigar starts relatively bitter. After a strong woody and somewhat strawy start, the cigar becomes significantly rounder after about 1 cm. From here the cigar is undoubtedly a punch. Mildly woody, somewhat leathery with a subtle floweriness. In addition a nice spiciness.

Wie schon oft festgestellt, sind die süßen Aromen des Kaltgeruches im Rauch nicht unbedingt präsent. So auch hier. Die Zigarre startet relativ herb. Nach einem kräftig holzigen und etwas strohigen Start wird die Zigarre nach etwa 1cm deutlich runder. Ab hier ist die Zigarre unzweifelhaft eine Punch. Mild-holzig, etwas ledrig mit einer subtilen Blumigkeit. Dazu eine schöne Würzigkeit.

2nd third / 2. Drittel:
This spiciness dominates the middle part and displaces the floweriness further into the background. The freshness of the cigar makes it appear a little bit biting. I assume, however, that this will subside after a certain period of aging.

Diese Würzigkeit dominiert den mittleren Teil und drängt die Blumigkeit weiter in den Hintergrund. Der Frische geschuldet wirkt die Zigarre retronasal etwas bissig. Ich gehe jedoch davon aus, dass sich das nach einer gewissen Lagerung legt.


3rd third / 3. Drittel:
At the beginning of the last third, nutty aromas gradually become noticeable. These are complemented by aromas of leather and some earth. Here the cigar already appears wonderfully round and balanced.
Sweet fruit aromas appear at the very end and round off the smoking experience pleasantly.

Zu Beginn des letzten Drittels werden nach und nach nussige Aromen feststellbar. Diese werden durch Aromen nach Leder und etwas Erde ergänzt. Hier wirkt die Zigarre bereits wunderbar rund und ausgewogen.
Ganz am Ende kommen süßliche Fruchtaromen auf und runden den Rauchgenuss angenehm ab.

Ash and combustion / Asche und Abbrand:
Medium grey, slightly patchy with good stability. Beautiful and even burning.

Mittelgrau, leicht fleckig mit einer guten Stabilität. Schön und gleichmäßiger Abbrand.

Conclusion / Fazit
Like the previously smoked Punch - Preferidos ER 2018 5ta Avenida, in my opinion, this one also has a very good aging potential.

Wie schon die zuvor gerauchte Punch - Preferidos ER 2018 5ta Avenida, so weist auch diese hier meiner Meinung nach ein sehr gutes Reifepotential auf.

Punch - Punch Punch (2018)

RG: 46 (18,3 mm)
Length: 143 mm
Longfiller, Totalmente a mano

Optics / Optik:
A very greasy wrapper. Very fine structure, hardly any veins. Colorado-Maduro.
Ein ausgesprochen speckiges Deckblatt. Sehr feine Struktur, kaum Adern. Colorado-Maduro.

Cold smell / Kaltgeruch:
Fresh forest ground, hazelnuts, some cinnamon and cardamom
Frischer Waldboden, Haselnüsse, etwas Zimt und Kardamom

1st third / 1. Drittel:
The cigar starts directly deliciously woody (beech and oak). In addition there are aromas of garden herbs.
Die Zigarre startet direkt lecker holzig (Buche und Eiche). Dazu kommen Aromen von Gartenkräutern.

2nd third / 2. Drittel:
In the middle there are more nutty aromas of walnuts and hazelnuts. The woody notes, moreover, remain present. So far a very tasty Kuba smoke.
Im mittleren Bereich sind verstärkt nussige Aromen nach Wal- und Haselnüssen. Die holzigen Noten bleiben aber weiterhin präsent. Bis jetzt ein sehr leckerer Kuba-Smoke.

3rd third / 3. Drittel:
Towards the end, the cigar becomes much stronger. Roasted aromas of singeing wood paired with malty brown bread dominate here.
Zum Ende hin wird die Zigarre deutlich kräftiger. Röstaromen nach angesengtem Holz gepaart mit malzigem Schwarzbrot dominieren hier.

Punch - Preferidos ER 2018 5ta Avenida (2019)

The current ER 2018 5ta Avenida is (once again) a special edition that is available in the following year. Anyway, the cigar is available and I tested it briefly.

From the beginning, the freshness of the thick Robusto is shown by a slight acidity. Nevertheless, nutty aromas and a certain sweetness are already quite present. As expected, the basic structure is a rather mild cigar, which is already developing well in the smoke process.

In my opinion, the cigar has a good ageing potential. In 5-7 years I expect the cigar will be a wonderfully aromatic and round smoke.

Bei der aktuellen ER 2018 5ta Avenida handelt es sich (mal wieder) um eine Sonderedition, die erst im darauffolgenden Jahr lieferbar ist. Wie dem auch sei, die Zigarre ist verfügbar und ich habe sie kurz angetestet.

Die Frische der dicken Robusto zeigt sich von Anfang an durch eine leichte Säure. Dennoch sind nussige Aromen und eine gewisse Süße schon recht präsent. Von Grundgerüst her eine erwartungsgemäß eher milde Zigarre, die sich im Rauchverlauf schon jetzt gut entwickelt.

Nach meiner Einschätzung weist die Zigarre ein gutes Reifepotential auf. Ich schätze, dass sie in 5-7 Jahren einen wunderbar aromatischen und runden Rauchverlauf bietet.

Top 5 of the year 2014

As to the beginning of each year I want to introduce my top 5 cigars of last year. And like every year, I found it not easy to select the appropriate one.

1st place goes this time, no doubt to the Cohiba - Behike from the 40 Aniversario Humidor of 2006. Even if such cigars provoke downright adulation, personally I perceived this cigar as outstandingly good.

2nd place is also a Cohiba. In this case, a Cohiba - Espléndidos (Cuba 2003).

The 3rd place goes to a newcomer: the Montecristo - Petit No. 2 (Cuba 2014). Although it is a fresh cigar, whose flavors are often not developed properly, this one is already wonderfully balanced and round.

From a Blindtasting with friends straight to No. 4 in my top list: Bolívar - Belicosos Finos

Last but not least is number 5 on the Punch - Gran Robusto, Edición Regional para España 2009

Wie zu Anfang jeden Jahren möchte ich meine Top-5-Zigarren des vergangenen Jahres vorstellen. Und wie jedes Jahr ist es mir nicht leicht gefallen, eine entsprechende Auswahl zu treffen.

Platz 1 geht diese Mal ohne Zweifel an die Cohiba - Behike aus dem 40 Aniversario Humidor von 2006. Auch wenn solche Zigarren Lobhudeleien geradezu herausfordern, fand ich persönlich diese Zigarre herausragend gut.

Platz 2 belegt ebenfalls eine Cohiba. In diesem Fall eine Cohiba - Espléndidos (Kuba 2003).

Platz 3 geht an einen Newcomer: die Montecristo - Petit No. 2 (Kuba 2014). Obwohl es sich um eine frische Zigarre handelt, deren Aromen oft noch nicht richtig entwickelt sind, ist diese hier bereits wunderbar ausgewogen und rund.

Aus einem Blindtasting unter Freunden direkt auf Platz 4 meiner Bestenliste: Bolívar - Belicosos Finos.

Zu guter Letzt geht Platz 5 an die die Punch - Gran Robusto, Edición Regional para España 2009.

Puros in Palma

I spent a few days in Palma de Mallorca. Beside Cigars of the standard series, also a few local Ediciones Regionales and Ediciones Limitadas were smoked. Some of them during the public viewing of the current soccer-championship.

Ich war für ein paar Tage in Palma de Mallorca unterwegs. Neben Standardzigarren wurden natürlich auch lokale Ediciones Regionales und Ediciones Limitadas geraucht. Einige während des Public Viewings der aktuellen Fußball-Weltbeisterschaft.

Optics / Optik:
The Regional is set in a immaculate colorado. The optically excellent wrapper has a very smooth surface without any unevenness and visible veins. A very pleasant cigar.

Die Regionales zeigt sich in einem makellosen Colorado. Das optisch hervorragende Deckblatt hat eine sehr glatte Oberfläche ohne jede Unebenheit und sichtbare Adern. Eine sehr ansprechende Zigarre.

Coldsmell / Kaltgeruch
In the first moment inconspicuous and mild. A pleasing coldsmell, slightly nutty with woody hints.

Im ersten Moment recht unauffällig und mild. Ein gefälliger Kaltgeruch, leicht nussig mit holzigen Andeutungen.

Top 5 of the year 2012

Last night, playing poker with friends, the question arose, which were our top 5 cigars, we have smoked last year. Not an easy question. Finally, we have enjoyed many, very good cigars. Ok, but here are my top 5 cigars, I smoked in 2012:

Gestern Abend beim Pokern mit Freunde kam die Frage auf, welches unserer 5 besten Zigarren waren, welche wir letztes Jahr geraucht haben. Keine einfache Frage, denn schließlich wurden viele verschiedene, sehr gute Zigarren genossen. Ok, aber hier nun meine 5 besten Zigarren, welche ich 2012 geraucht habe:

1. Montecristo - Salomones II (Cuba, 2002)
2. Reynaldo Gonzalez - Maravillosos (Cuba, 2012)
3. San Cristobal - El Morro (Cuba, 2007)
4. Punch - Double Coronas (Cuba, 2003)
5. Montecristo - Especiales No. 2 (Cuba, 2007)

Punch - Nifas (Oct 2001)

Longfiller, Totalmenta a Mano
Discontinued in 2002.

Optics / Optik:
A very elegant format where you can see the maturity. The wrapper is glossless, but still a bit greasy. Visually but still very appealing.

Ein äußerst elegantes Format, welchem man die Reife etwas ansieht. Dennoch verfügt das matte Deckblatt über einen Rest Speckigkeit. Optisch aber immer noch sehr ansprechend.

Coldsmell / Kaltgeruch:
Olfactory the cigar was presenting itself sweet, mellow and fruity. It's reminding of dried fruit. In addition, I thought spicy incense identify.

Olfaktorisch präsentiert sich die Zigarre süß, lieblich und fruchtig. Man fühlt sich an Trockenobst erinnert. Daneben glaubte ich würzigen Weihrauch festzustellen.

1st third / 1. Drittel:
The cigar starts with light toasty aromas that come nutty, but at the same time so creamy. The dried fruit from the coldsmell is also here, but is accompanied by aromas of black tea.

Die Zigarre startet mit leichten Röstaromen, welche nussig, aber gleichzeitig cremig daher kommen. Das Trockenobst aus dem Kaltgeruch findet sich auch hier, wird aber von Aromen von schwarzem Tee begleitet.

2nd third / 3. Drittel:
The central part is supported by slight salty flavor and green tea. But at the same time the cigar is still creamy. The age of the cigar shows up in a slightly "dusty" tone, which reminds me of a attic, which is not a negativ meaning.

Die Mitte wird getragen von leicht salzigen Aromen und grünem Tee. Gleichzeitig aber immer noch cremig. Das Alter der Zigarre zeigt sich in einem leicht "staubigen" Grundton, welcher mich an einen Dachboden erinnert, was nicht negativ gemeint ist.

3nd third / 3. Drittel:
The finale is again typical Cuban. Earthy, woody, tart and spicy. But not violently, but elegant with a complex depth.

Das Finale kommt dann wieder typisch Kubanisch daher. Erdig, holzig und herb-würzig. Aber nicht ungestüm, sondern elegant mit einer komplexen Tiefe.

Burning, ash / Abbrand, Asche:
Beautiful, even burning with a flat firecone.
Light gray, compact ash with a closed surface. Very good stability.

Schöner, gleichmäßiger Abbrand. Flacher Glutkegel.
Hellgraue, kompakte Asche mit geschlossener Oberfläche. Sehr gute Stabilität.

Conclusion / Fazit:
I am sorry that such a great and elegant formats disappears more and more from the markets. I can't share the trends towards ever larger ringgauges. So I enjoy the nifaas, which I still have.

Ich finde es schade, das solche großartigen und eleganten Formate mehr und mehr vom Markt verschwinden. Den Trend zu immer größeren Ringmaßen kann ich so gar nicht teilen. Umso mehr genieße ich die Nifas, die ich noch habe.
