And now to the E.P. Carrillo Pledge - Prequel. At least according to the score in the Cigar Aficionado, this is currently the best cigar in the world. Since I usually attach little importance to such ratings, I made my own opinion here.

98 Punkte! Eine solch hohe Punktzahl hat die Zeitschrift Cigar Aficionado zuletzt Anfang der 90er Jahre vergeben:

Und nun also an die E.P. Carrillo Pledge - Prequel. Zumindest nach der Punktzahl im Cigar Aficionado handelt es sich hierbei aktuell um die Beste Zigarre der Welt. Da ich normalerweise solchen Bewertungen wenig Bedeutung beimesse, mache ich mir hier mein eigenes Bild.

Optics / Optik:
The soft box-pressed cigar with the beautiful blue band has an asymmetrical cross-section of 21 mm x 14 mm, which makes it difficult for me to talk about "ring gauge". The maduro-colored exhibits a nice baconiness, but a distinct rough surface. Still, it is finely textured and without any distracting leaf veins.

Die soft box-pressed Zigarre mit der schönen blauen Banderole weist einen unsymmetrischen Querschnitt von 21 mm x 14 mm, der es mir schwer macht, von „Ringmaß“ zu sprechen. Das madurofarbene weist eine schöne Speckigkeit, jedoch eine deutliche raue Oberfläche auf. Dennoch ist es fein strukturiert und ohne störende Blattadern.

Cold smell / Kaltgeruch:
The Prequel has a very intense cold smell. Primarily I perceive a strong smell of dark chocolate, wood and nicotine (?). In the background, I detected nut aromas and some garden herbs. In any case, the blend seems to tend to be somewhat stronger.

Die Prequel weist eine sehr intensiven Kaltgeruch auf. Primär nehme ich einen starken Geruch nach dunkler Schokolade, Holz und Nikotin (?) wahr. Hintergründig entdeckte ich Nussaromen und etwas Gartenkräuter. Auf jeden Fall scheint die Zigarre tendenziell etwas stärker geblendet zu sein.

1st third / 1. Drittel:
As expected, the cigar starts directly quite strong. In addition to significant nut flavors dominates a concise pepper spiciness, which, however, decreases somewhat after about 1 cm. Overall, the Robusto is very spicy and brings a lot of power. Thus, finer flavors are unfortunately suppressed.

Wie zu erwarten, startet die Zigarre direkt recht kräftig. Neben deutlichen Nussaromen dominiert eine prägnante Pfefferschärfe, die nach etwa 1 cm jedoch etwas nachlässt. Insgesamt ist die Robusto sehr würzig und bringt ordentlich Power mit. Dadurch werden feinere Aromen leider unterdrückt.

2nd third / 2. Drittel:
In the second third, the cigar seems much rounder and more aromatic. This tendency was already apparent in the first third, but here I like the cigar even more. In addition to the already mentioned nut flavors, I find a pleasant wood note, some chocolate and caramel.

Im zweiten Drittel wirkt die Zigarre deutlich runder und aromatischer. Diese Tendenz zeichnete sich bereits im ersten Drittel ab, hier gefällt mir die Zigarre jedoch nochmal besser. Neben den bereits genannten Nussaromen finde ich eine angenehme Holznote, etwas Schokolade und Karamell.

3rd third / 3. Drittel:
The aroma of the cigar stays largely constant in the last third. It remains very pleasant and aromatic, but increases again noticeably in strength.

Das Aroma der Zigarre bleibt im letzten Drittel weitgehend konstant. Sie bleibt weiterhin sehr angenehm und aromatisch, legt aber in der Stärke wieder merklich zu.

Conclusion / Fazit:
Certainly, the E.C. Carrillo Pledge - Prequel is a very good cigar, but it first needs some time to develop its aroma. However, there are quite a lot of cigars that I like more.

Sicherlich ist die E.C. Carrillo Pledge - Prequel eine sehr gute Zigarre, die jedoch erstmal eine gewisse Zeit braucht, um ihre Aromatik zu entwickeln. Allerdings gibt es etliche Zigarren, die mir besser gefallen.
