Optics / Optik:
Strong maduro, shiny greasy wrapper with a fine veining. Perfect and extremely attractive appearance.

Kräftiges Maduro, glänzend speckiges Deckblatt mit einer feinen Aderung. Perfektes und äußerst ansprechendes Äußeres.

Coldsmell / Kaltgeruch:
In the coldsmell literally sweet. Roasted almonds in the foreground. Furthermore, fresh hazelnuts and nougat. But also a little black pepper. Very attractive.

Im Kaltgeruch regelrecht süß. Gebrannte Mandeln im Vordergrund. Weiterhin frische Haselnüsse und Nougat. Aber auch etwas schwarzer Pfeffer. Sehr ansprechend.

1st third / 1. Drittel:
Despite a pronounced spiciness, the cigar begins very creamy. Very full flavor profile. Complex herb, black pepper (but without sharpness), some flint. In addition to that an earthy foundation.

Trotz einer ausgeprägten Würzigkeit, beginnt die Zigarre ausgesprochen cremig. Sehr volle Aromen. Komplexe Kräuter, schwarzer Pfeffer (jedoch ohne Schärfe), etwas Feuerstein. Dazu ein erdiges Fundament.

2nd third / 2. Drittel:
Light bitter notes appear towards the middle, supporting very pleasant the recent aromas. A fairly distinct sweetness is added. However, woody flavors are now detectable.
Nevertheless the cigar remains very complex and spicy.

Zur Mitte hin treten leichte Bitternoten auf, welche die bisherigen Aromen sehr angenehm unterstützen. Dazu kommt eine recht deutliche Süße. Aber auch holzige Aromen sind nun feststellbar.
Nichts desto trotz bleibt die Zigarre ausgesprochen würzig und komplex.

3rd third / 3. Drittel:
Even towards the end the cigar loses none of their appeal. Although it is difficult to identify individual flavors, the complexity of aromas makes sure that every draw tastes a little different.

Auch zum Ende hin verliert die Zigarre nichts von ihrer Attraktivität. Auch wenn es mir schwer fällt, einzelne Aromen herauszustellen, sorgt die Komplexität dafür, dass jeder Zug etwas anders schmeckt. Eine bemerkenswert gute Zigarre.

Conclusion / Fazit:
Unfortunately, the cigar has its best days clearly behind it.
Leider hat die Zigarre ihre besten Tage eindeutig hinter sich.

Victorinox Cigar 36 in Partagás-Optik

After Chris from Chris Custom Works already has published a Victorinox Cigar 36 in Hoyo de Monterrey optics, the brand new Victorinox Cigar 36 – Partagás Edition is now released. Again a very nice mod, on which a collector will certainly have a lot of joy. Even this time the knive is a unique piece.

Nachdem Chris von Chris Custom Works bereits ein Victorinox Cigar 36 in Hoyo de Monterrey-Optik veröffentlicht hat, ist nun das ganz neue Victorinox Cigar 36 – Partagás Edition erschienen. Wieder ein sehr schöner Mod, an dem ein Sammler sicherlich viel Freude haben wird. Denn auch dieses Mal handelt es sich um ein Einzelstück.

Davidoff - Chateau Margaux (Cuba, 1986)

Beside of the Cohiba - Behike from 2006, the cuban Davidoffs are one of the very special treasures on the cigar market. That's why I am pleased to be able to call some of these cigars my own.

Neben der Cohiba - Behike aus 2006 gehören kubanische Davidoffs zu den ganz besonderen Kostbarkeiten auf dem Zigarrenmarkt. Darum freue ich mich, einige dieser Zigarren mein Eigen nennen zu dürfen.

Optics / Optik:
The cigar presents itself in an immaculate Colorado. The beautiful wrapper has no significant leaf veins. An absolutely perfect appearance.

Die Zigarre präsentiert sich in einem makellosen Colorado. Das sehr schöne Deckblatt weist keine nennenswerten Blattadern auf. Ein absolut perfektes Äußeres.

Coldsmell / Kaltgeruch:
As might be expected, the cigar smell mild, but not boring. Sweet and floral aromas come to the fore. For this purpose, white coffee and white chocolate. But even the typical Cuban wood notes can be found. They are here present in the form of sandalwood and cedar.

Wie zu erwarten riecht die Zigarre mild, jedoch nicht langweilig. Süßliche und blumige Aromen treten in den Vordergrund. Dazu Milchkaffee und weiße Schokolade. Aber auch die typisch kubanischen Holznoten sind zu finden. Hier sind sie in Form von Sandel- und Zedernholz präsent.

1st third / 1. Drittel:
Despite the age of nearly 30 years, the Davidoff is still astonishingly present. The smoke shows a very complex depth of flavors. Mild-woody with aromas of sandalwood and wooden cigar box. But also fresh notes can be found, which reminiscent of champagne. For this purpose, a pronounced creaminess.

Trotz des Alters von fast 30 Jahren ist die Davidoff noch erstaunlich präsent. Im Rauch zeigt sich eine sehr komplexe Tiefe an Aromen. Mild-holzig mit Aromen nach Sandelholz und Zigarrenkiste. Aberauch frische Noten, die an Champagner erinnern, sind zu finden. Dazu eine ausgesprochene Cremigkeit.

2nd third / 2. Drittel:
Towards the center, the woodiness slightly increases. Through aromas of roasted almonds, the cigar has a slightly sweet touch. Furthermore, complex and creamy.

Zur Mitte hin nimmt die Holzigkeit etwas zu. Durch Aromen nach gebrannten Mandeln wirkt die Zigarre leicht süßlich. Weiterhin sehr komplex und cremig.

3rd third / 3. Drittel:
Towards the end of aromas of floral garden herbs protrude into the foreground. Parsley, but continue cedar is detectable. For this a subtle acid touch occurs in the background and provides additional spiciness. Aromas of hazelnuts and walnuts support the impression. Furthermore, the cigar is still creamy and very profound.

Gegen Ende treten Aromen von floralen Gartenkräutern in den Vordergrund. Petersilie, aber auch weiterhin Zedernholz ist feststellbar. Dazu tritt eine subtile Säurenote im Hintergrund auf und sorgt für eine zusätzliche Würze. Aromen nach Haselnüssen und Walnüssen unterstützen den Eindruck. Weiterhin ist die Zigarre nach wie vor cremig und sehr tiefgründig.

Padron Classic - Panetela natural

Optics / Optik:
Like many Padrons the Panetela is slightly boxpressed. The colorado-maduro colored cover is not quite so uniformly colored, as I expect at premium cigars. The structure is rather slightly coarser with clearly visible veins. Nevertheless, the cover sheet has an appetizing greasiness.

Wie viele Padrons ist auch die Panetela leicht boxpressed. Das coloado-madurofarbene Deckblatt ist dabei nicht ganz so gleichmäßig gefärbt, wie ich es bei Premiumzigarren erwarte. Auch Struktur ist eher etwas gröber mit deutlich sichtbaren Adern. Trotzdem weist das Deckblatt eine appetitliche Speckigkeit auf.

Coldsmell / Kaltgeruch:
The coldsmell leaves a typical Nicaragua impression. Strong and spicy chocolate is paired with some popcorn and garden herbs. Overall a very inviting smell.

Der Kaltgeruch hinterlässt einen typischen Nicaragua-Eindruck. Kräftig-würzige Schokolade ist gepaart mit etwas Popcorn und Gartenkräutern. Insgesamt ein sehr einladender Geruch.

1st third / 1. Drittel:
The cigar starts directly with delicious spicy aromas. As a basic aroma I can find leather and nougat. Joining with them a minimum of chili sharpness is added that matches perfectly with the sweet nougat. All packed in a beautiful, creamy smoke.

Die Zigarre startet direkt lecker würzig. Im Grundaroma kann ich Leder und Nougat feststellen. Dazu gesellt sich eine minimale Chilischärfe, die hervorragend zum Nougat passt. Alles verpackt in einem schönen, cremigen Rauch.

2nd third / 2. Drittel:
Towards the center, the slim cigar becomes milder, but without losing its aroma. As expected, the basic aromas of the first third also can be found here. However, in this state, instead of chile spiciness, a delicious aroma of roasted hazelnuts occurs in the foreground. The cigar is quite complex and very pleasant.

Zur Mitte hin wird die schlanke Zigerre etwas milder, ohne jedoch an Aromatik zu verlieren. Die Grundaromen des ersten Drittels finden sich erwartungsgemäß auch hier. Statt der Chilischärfe tritt hier jedoch ein leckeres Aroma nach gerösteten Haselnüssen in den Vordergrund. Dabei ist die Zigarre recht komplex und sehr angenehm.

3rd third / 3. Drittel:
Even towards the end retained the basic flavors of leather and nougat. Here they are supported by more tart flavors. At the same time, the creaminess decreases in favor of a dry smoke.

Auch zum Ende hin bleiben die Grundaromen nach Leder und Nougat erhalten. Hier werden sie von eher herben Aromen unterstützt. Gleichzeitig nimmt die Cremigkeit zugunsten eines trockenen Rauchs ab.

Humidor control with HumiCon-Shield

Just over 2 years ago I put into operation my humidor with the self-developed humidifier "HumidorControl F". And I'm very happy with it. But for some time already annoyed me that the used Relay Shield clacks minimal and the flying wired Protoshield, although you can not see, looked like a permanent provisional arrangement.

The resulting solution is a self-developed and professionally produced control board, which combines both Shields and works with electronic transistors instead of mechanical relays. In order to have more options for the future, the circuit was designed somewhat universally.

Here are the new main features:

• 12V input voltage
• Power supply for all 5V Arduino models (Uno, Leonardo, Mega, Yun)
• Up to 4 independently readable hygrometer
• Up to 4 independently controllable fans (convection and/or humidifier)
• Display via I²C bus connectable
• 3 analog inputs for future expansions

Along with the new board, I made a few small, rather cosmetic changes in the control software and rename the software to "HumiCon U". This is optimized for Arduino Uno. In a next step, a webinterface via WLAN is scheduled. This will be probably realized as "HumiCon Y" with an Arduino Yun.

Humidorsteuerung mit HumiCon-Shield

Vor etwas über 2 Jahren habe ich meinen Humidorschrank mit der selbstentwickelte Befeuchtersteuerung "HumidorControl F" in Betrieb genommen. Und bis jetzt bin ich damit sehr zufrieden. Jedoch ärgerte mich schon seit einiger Zeit, dass das verwendete Relais-Shield minimal klackt und das fliegend verdrahtete ProtoShield, obwohl man es nicht sieht, wie ein dauerhaftes Provisorium wirkte.

Die Lösung war jetzt eine selbstentwickelte und professionell geätzte Steuerungsplatine, die beide Shields miteinander kombiniert und statt mit Relais mit Schalttransistoren arbeitet. Gleichzeitig habe ich die Schaltung etwas universeller gestaltet, um so für die Zukunft mehr Möglichkeiten zu haben.

Hier die neuen Eckdaten:

• 12V Eingangsspannung
• Stromversorgung für alle 5V-Arduinomodelle (Uno, Leonardo, Mega, Yun)
• Bis zu 4 unabhängige Hygrometer
• Bis zu 4 unabhängige Lüfter (Umluft und/oder Befeuchter)
• Display über I²C-Bus anschließbar
• 3 analoge Eingänge für zukünftige Erweiterungen

Gleichzeitig mit der neuen Platine habe ich ein paar kleine, eher kosmetische Änderungen in der Steuerungssoftware vorgenommen und die Software nach "HumiCon U" umbenannt. Diese ist für Arduino Uno optimiert. In einem nächsten Schritt ist ein Webschnittstelle via WLAN geplant. Diese wird wahrscheinlich als "HumiCon Y" mit einem Arduino Yun realisiert werden.

Saint Luis Rey - Pacificos ER 2009 Asia Pacifico

Optics / Optik:
The cigar is wrapped in a nearly flawless wrapper. Only a small fermentation spot spoils the appearance. The maduro-colored wrapper has a beautiful and even veins. The greasy impression downright increases the appetite.

Die Zigarre ist in ein fast makelloses Deckblatt gewickelt. Lediglich ein kleiner Fermentationsfleck trübt das Erscheinungsbild. Das madurofarbene Deckblatt weist eine schöne, gleichmäßige Aderung auf und der speckige Eindruck macht regelrecht Appetit.

Coldsmell / Kaltgeruch:
The first impression of cold smell is relatively mild. Sweet with significant aromas of milk chocolate. In the background are detectable aromas of dried garden herbs.

Der erste Eindruck vom Kaltgeruch ist relativ mild. Süßlich mit deutlichen Aromen nach Milchschokolade. Im Hintergrund sind Aromen nach getrockneten Gartenkräutern feststellbar.

1st third / 1. Drittel:
As a first impression while smoking the description "old cupboard" I get in mind. This is not meant negatively. It refers to an impression old, seasoned wood. A kind of varnish, as it is known by wine. An aromatic component is made of sandalwood and some menthol. Overall, the first impression is nice and round.

Als erster Eindruck kommt mir beim Rauchen die Beschreibung "alter Schrank" in den Sinn. Das ist jedoch in keiner Weise negativ gemeint. Vielmehr ist damit ein Eindruck nach altem, abgelagerten Holz gemeint. Eine Art Firnis, wie man sie von Wein kennt. Eine aromatische Komponente wird von Sandelholz und etwas Menthol gebildet. Insgesamt ist der erste Eindruck schön rund.

2nd third / 2. Drittel:
The mid section the woodiness increases. Also intensify the flavors of garden herbs. Furthermore, the cigar offers a wonderful complexity.

Im mittleren Bereich nimmt die Holzigkeit zu. Ebenfalls werden die Aromen nach Gartenkräutern intensiviert. Weiterhin besticht die Zigarre durch eine wunderbare Komplexität.

3rd third / 3. Drittel:
Towards the end, the cigar becomes, as expected, increasingly stronger. The woody aromas decrease in favor of leather. The varnish has completely disappeared. In its place, a pleasant spiciness has entered.

Zum Ende hin wird die Zigarre erwartungsgemäß zunehmend stärker. Die holzigen Aromen nehmen zugunsten von Leder ab. Die Firnis ist vollständig verschwunden. An ihre Stelle ist eine angenehme Würzigkeit getreten.

Bolívar - Fabulosos ER 2009 Benelux

Optics / Optik:
Colorado colored, very fine wrapper. No remarkable veins, greasy, shiny. Perfect appearance.
Coloradofarbenes, sehr feines Deckblatt. Keine auffallenden Adern, speckig, glänzend. Perfektes Aussehen.

Coldsmell / Kaltgeruch:
Mild, nutty, milk chocolate, hazelnut, almond.
Mild nussig, Milchschokolade, Haselnuss, Mandel.

1st third / 1. Drittel:
Nutty, very round, hazelnut, slightly earthy. Compared with the previously tasted Leaf downright mild. Slightly fruity, minimal citrus flavors.
Nussig, sehr rund, Haselnuss, etwas erdig. Im Vergleich mit der kürzlich getasteten Leaf regelrecht mild. Leicht fruchtig, minimale Zitrusaromen.

2nd third / 2. Drittel:
In the middle also the nutty flavors dominate. Here, however, significantly increase the earthy notes. In addition, woody flavors come up. A very creamy smoke. Furthermore, very round and very tasty.
Auch in der Mitte dominieren die nussigen Aromen. Hier nehmen jedoch die erdigen Noten deutlich zu. Zusätzlich kommen holzige Aromen auf. Sehr cremiger Rauch. Weiterhin sehr rund und äußerst lecker.

3rd third / 3. Drittel:
The mild spiciness continues until the end. The cigar is becoming increasingly complex. The earthy flavors dominate significantly. A minimum menthol freshness is detectable in the background.
Die milde Würzigkeit setzt sich bis zum Ende fort. Die Zigarre wird zunehmend komplexer. Die erdigen Aromen dominieren deutlich. Dazu minimale Mentholfrische im Hintergrund.

Top 5 of the year 2014

As to the beginning of each year I want to introduce my top 5 cigars of last year. And like every year, I found it not easy to select the appropriate one.

1st place goes this time, no doubt to the Cohiba - Behike from the 40 Aniversario Humidor of 2006. Even if such cigars provoke downright adulation, personally I perceived this cigar as outstandingly good.

2nd place is also a Cohiba. In this case, a Cohiba - Espléndidos (Cuba 2003).

The 3rd place goes to a newcomer: the Montecristo - Petit No. 2 (Cuba 2014). Although it is a fresh cigar, whose flavors are often not developed properly, this one is already wonderfully balanced and round.

From a Blindtasting with friends straight to No. 4 in my top list: Bolívar - Belicosos Finos

Last but not least is number 5 on the Punch - Gran Robusto, Edición Regional para España 2009

Wie zu Anfang jeden Jahren möchte ich meine Top-5-Zigarren des vergangenen Jahres vorstellen. Und wie jedes Jahr ist es mir nicht leicht gefallen, eine entsprechende Auswahl zu treffen.

Platz 1 geht diese Mal ohne Zweifel an die Cohiba - Behike aus dem 40 Aniversario Humidor von 2006. Auch wenn solche Zigarren Lobhudeleien geradezu herausfordern, fand ich persönlich diese Zigarre herausragend gut.

Platz 2 belegt ebenfalls eine Cohiba. In diesem Fall eine Cohiba - Espléndidos (Kuba 2003).

Platz 3 geht an einen Newcomer: die Montecristo - Petit No. 2 (Kuba 2014). Obwohl es sich um eine frische Zigarre handelt, deren Aromen oft noch nicht richtig entwickelt sind, ist diese hier bereits wunderbar ausgewogen und rund.

Aus einem Blindtasting unter Freunden direkt auf Platz 4 meiner Bestenliste: Bolívar - Belicosos Finos.

Zu guter Letzt geht Platz 5 an die die Punch - Gran Robusto, Edición Regional para España 2009.
